One of the most intensive tasks we've inherited since purchasing this home is walnut harvesting. We have spent a lot of time picking up walnuts, removing the hulls, and getting the nut meat out. The kids sold bags of walnuts in the ward for Christmas gift money and we harvested a fair amount on our own. I like giving out candied nuts at Christmas anyways, so it was a fruitful venture. We've had a really mild winter and despite picking up buckets and buckets of nuts, our trees didn't drop the majority of them. I didn't want this year's crop mixing with next year's. To ensure we weren't wasting our time opening old, moldy ones, Steve took measures into his own hands and we borrowed a 22 foot ladder. Combine that with his 12 foot "walnut picker" pole and we managed to shake the rest of the nuts out. 7 full garbage bags later, we finished the tree in front. The tree in the back is unfortunately too tall to reach even with our tools, so it's still pretty full of them. I guess we need a 40 foot ladder to get anywhere with that one. Next year we will be getting a corn sheller/husker hopefully to help with the process. We're becoming quite educated about all things black walnut.
The bike helmet turned out to be a good idea more than once.
