Ultimately, I feel like it was an inspired move. First, I feel like a better mom because my child is progressing, which was NOT happening with potty training. Second, Rowan has never tried to climb out of the crib, but he was testing its weight and strength limits. I'm sure the crib company didn't intend for a 35 pound kid to use his bed like a wrestling match ring. Rattling and bouncing off the sides of the crib while doing WWF moves has to invalidate the warranty. I'm sure at some point the poor thing would've fallen apart. Third, it's working!! Maybe I'm overstating, but Rowan has no problem going to bed although the naps have been a sticky situation. Having a visible way to get out of bed apparently has inspired #1 to be bold enough to venture out of bed during naptime. So I decided to change "nap time" to "quiet time" with an earlier bed time and had dismal results because Rowan becomes just like me without sleep. It looks a little something like this.

The first 3 months of Rowan's life here on earth were filled with moments like that. I do not function without sleep and apparently neither does my son. He has rage-filled moments where he'll even slam his head into the floor. Not pretty. So after 2 days with no naps and an earlier bedtime, Rowan became increasingly grumpy and I was desperate. I crawled into bed with him hoping my model of a sleeping person would cause him to do the same. No dice. It only ended up with me being a novel thing for him to slap around. Then I threatened him with certain death (time out) if he got out of his bed and that seemed to have worked. I fell asleep in my own bed and woke up to this. Ahhh, sweet victory.
